NASA – Mystery Spots On Ceres Up Close

Anticipation has been building as NASA’s Dawn spacecraft reaches the closest point of its approach to the largest object in the asteroid belt, the dwarf planet Ceres, which is believed to host a hidden ocean and also sports a series of mysterious bright spots.

Dawn finally began its nearest orbit of Ceres in the past few days, and has begun to send back the closest images we’re likely to see of the odd object any time soon. The very first image sent back from a height of just 3,200 miles was shared by NASA today. Although it doesn’t contain a view of the bright spots suspected to be light reflecting off a sheen surface like ice, the Dawn team says it is working on gathering those close-ups now.
